From Data Tables to Pixels to Intelligence:
The Evolution of TNRIS/TxGIO and the Geospatial Technology in Texas

The story of GIS in Texas began at a time when many of the maps and geospatial datasets we now take for granted simply did not exist. They had to be created, often from the ground up. Over the decades, TNRIS/TxGIO has been part of an extraordinary transformation from creating and collecting basic geographic information to providing statewide geospatial data that supports advanced analytics, predictive modeling, real-time systems, and increasingly, artificial intelligence.

But the evolution of GIS is about more than technology. As our ability to collect and analyze information has grown, so has the importance of how we communicate it. Today’s geospatial profession needs scientists, technologists, analysts, and developers, but it also needs designers, storytellers, and creative thinkers who can transform complex information into compelling visual experiences.

Join us as we explore where we started, how far the geospatial industry has come, and how the convergence of data, technology, artificial intelligence, and creativity is shaping what comes next.

A little bit about Richard: Richard Wade provides strategic direction and oversight for all Texas Geographic Information Office (TxGIO) programs and serves as the Geographic Information Officer for the State of Texas. He brings 35 years of experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology and computer mapping.

Richard began his career as an intern with TNRIS in 1986, where he helped establish one of the first statewide GIS programs at the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB). He later moved into the private sector and co founded Windrose Data Corporation, a firm that delivered GIS data and services to environmental and energy clients nationwide. Richard returned to the TWDB in 2005. He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Texas State University.

Training Day: September 23rd (8:00 am to 5:00 pm) Facilitated by TeachMeGIS, our Training Day will consist of two concurrent training courses (see below). Register for one of the two and enjoy a mid-day lunch as well as a light breakfast, coffee, and snacks.

Conference Day: September 24th (8:30 am to 5:00 pm) Conference Day features a light breakfast with coffee, all-day speaker presentations, a Sponsor Gallery Room, a plated lunch, raffles, and trivia.
